The Little Princess
This past weekend was the famed “Nutcracker Weekend” for Kayla and her daddy. They left Friday afternoon for Seattle and a beautiful hotel room overlooking the city. She spent most of the week getting all worked up about it. As part of the tradition, Scott and she had a date night earlier in the week to shop for her dress, shoes, accessories, you name it.
They arrived at the hotel, hung out and watched a movie and then they were off to Benihana’s for dinner. What a crack up! She and a few of her friends and their dads lit up the place with their giggles and smiles. I can imagine it was quite a sight to see this bunch of grown men with their little princesses. Back at their room, Kayla and Scott had an arrangement. Kayla got to eat candies and watch a bunch of movies while Scott slept. At the end of each movie (you know, the 20 minute cartoon movies) she would come and tap dad, asking for another one. He would oblige and promptly doze off again.
The next morning was filled with more fun. They went down to the market, had some French pastries (she must be her father’s daughter) and shopped around a bit. Around lunchtime, Scott asked Kayla what she wanted to eat for lunch. With a rather curious look of confusion and “duh” she stated, “Room service, dad!” as if there was any other choice!!! Not mac-n-cheese or chicken nuggets but room service. And what did she order? The little princess propped herself up in bed with a bowl of bow-tie spaghetti.
Full of food and delight, Kayla then dawned her new red dress and sparkly boots for the big event downtown. She and dad had some coffee and cocoa at the show and met up with their friends to see the beautiful ballerinas. Of course, there was plenty of dancing and imagining they were ballerinas at intermission (not the men, obviously). Kayla came home feeling like a princess should: beautiful, smart, happy, confident, and loved.
Each day I watch her grow and find the love she will look for all of her life and I see her daddy there, committed and proud. And what does mom do? Well, aside from the obvious wish for a night with my hubby like that, I pray for the man who will take over this special job and that Kayla will settle for nothing less than what her father has shown her. What a blessing to have such a family under God. He is so good.
